Doing well in mathematics can strongly boost your ATAR because Mathematics Extension 1 and 2 have always been the highest scaled HSC subjects. Mathematics (2 unit) also scales strongly, about the same as English Advanced, Physics, or Economics (scaled mean of around 30 in the past couple of years). As a result, doing well in maths can be highly rewarding (perhaps the most rewarding subjects) to your ATAR.
Preliminary mathematics tutoring
In year 11, we encourage students to learn as much and as fast as they can handle. Students should not stress too much over what’s currently covered and being examined at school, especially if they find the school pace relatively easy. As year 11 does not count towards the HSC, students should aim to learn ahead, and start covering year 12 content as early as possible, particularly if students are doing Extension 1, and plan to do Extension 2 in year 12.
Our tutors can provide the extra work and guidance to facilitate accelerated learning (including accelerated students). On the other hand, our tutors can also provide remedial help to students who are struggling to keep at the school pace, so that the transition into year 12 occurs smoothly.

HSC mathematics tutoring
In year 12, students should focus on the topics covered by their school as they are covered. The reason is simple: internal exams and assessments are written and marked by the school, and your performance in these exams determines your assessment rank – this counts towards your ATAR.
Therefore, it is a good idea to focus on the topics that will be in your next exam, in order to maximise your assessment ranks. If a student had a productive year 11, where they were able to cover some of the year 12 content ahead of time, this would make the HSC year easier.
